What is Career Mentoring?

According to Webster's Dictionary "career" is defined as: "a field for or pursuit of consecutive progressive achievement especially in public, professional, or business life; a profession for which one trains and which is undertaken as a permanent calling" and "mentor" as: "a trusted counselor or guide"

A career is also a journey and we are here to give you council and be your guide along the way.

What is a Mentor?  Why are some called Career Coaches?

There is a significant difference between a Coach and a Mentor.  Let's take a quick look.

Coaches focus on:
  • Knowledge and skill development, not on the relationship.
  • Usually short term.
  • The coach is usually your boss or supervisor.
  • Focused on your current job or position.
  • Performance-based and evaluative. Does performance reviews.
  • Focused on benefiting the employee.
  • One can be an effective coach without being a Mentor.

Mentors focus on:
  • Development through the relationship.
  • Mentoring relationships usually last for one year, but can be for a lifetime.
  • Mentors are usually outside the management chain, often external to the organization.
  • Development-based, not tied to performance reviews.
  • Relationships are mutually beneficial.
  • You can't be an effective mentor without also being a good coach.

A Mentor brings all the value of a coach to the relationship, and much more, focusing on your overall life goals, career and success.

A Mentor will help you Rise Above the crowd, and help you achieve and exceed your goals in life.
